How To Backup Your Radix DM Installation

This article provides a brief overview of the backup requirements of Radix DM and is intended for network administrators.  Radix DM installations consist of three main components:

  1. The Microsoft SQL Server database, named RadixDM2 by default.
  2. The Radix DM server files and folder which are located in a network share accessible to all Radix DM users.
  3. The folders and documents themselves stored under each library group base path.

For organisations with multiple sites, Radix DM may be configured with more than one Location.  In this case library group folders and documents may exist at each Location.

Backup and disaster recovery regime must provide an adequate backup of the RadixDM2 database in a state that can be easily restored, preferably to a point as close to the date and time of the last document save or change in Radix DM.  A suitable maintenance plan should also be configured for the database.  Specialist expertise is required to ensure a Microsoft SQL Server database has appropriate backup and maintenance and it is recommended that you seek the advice of a qualified network engineer.

Radix DM stores documents in a structured folder system, the base path of which can be seen in Radix DM Administration.  To do this, click Libraries, then Library Groups, then double click the desired library group).  Each library group has a different base path which can be a different location on the same server or even a different server.  It is essential that each library group is separately considered to ensure it is included in the backup and disaster recovery regime.

Typical open file issues should be taken into consideration when planning and managing the backup of the documents and database.  It is recommended that robust and reliable network backup software and hardware be used with matching agents for SQL Server and Open Files where appropriate.
